NY Times Crossword
« on: September 10, 2021, 11:03:06 AM »
I subscribe to the NYT crossword and until today have been able to download through Cruciverb the puzzle as a PUZ file.  Today, it apparently is a JSON file which I am unable to read using the Standalone Classic Crosswords app.  When I click on the NY TIMES link, I get a screen saying “status: ERROR, errors, [Not Found] results”.

Any assistance, information, and even commiserating appreciated.

I have been using Cruciverb to do the NYT XWP in AcrossLite, but today clicking on the link gives me an error page.

I guess they stopped a month late...

NYT Games No Longer Available on Across Lite as of Aug. 10

By Everdeen Mason

    Published Aug. 2, 2021Updated Aug. 3, 2021

Starting Aug. 10, we will no longer support crossword play on Across Lite in order to focus on editing more puzzles and improving our internal tools and processes. This means we won’t provide downloadable .puz files for use on that platform for future or archive puzzles. You can play the NYT crossword on our Crossword App and on desktop and mobile web. We will continue to provide downloadable PDFs for pen-on-paper play.

Thank you for supporting our team as we improve and streamline our processes to allow our editors to do what they love best: edit fun puzzles our community submits to us. If you have any technical issues when playing our puzzles, please contact NYTGames@nytimes.com.

As always, use your computer to copy the text below, save/paste it to a text file, and then open it with Across Lite (to solve or print) or save as .puz (to send it to your mobile device for solving there). Note: be sure not to leave any blank spaces at the end of the text file as Across Lite will choke.

Me, too. I get the message: File not found on server. I subscribe to both the NYT Games and the NYT digital, so I shouldn’t have any problems. What’s going on, Cruciverb?

Hi Patricia. The problem isn't on Cruciverb - the NYT no longer creates nor posts the .puz versions of the crosswords, only the .pdf versions (see the post by SVKeeley a few entries down for details). A workaround is available for now using the text files in this forum thread (see the next post for example) using the Across Lite app on your computer to make your own .puz files for printing or use on your various devices. Hope this helps.

No more on Across Lite? Bummer. I know I can do it using the NYT site, but I liked being told when I had to worry about rebuses (which I hate). Once again, the NYTXW doesn’t care about its public.

Patricia, like you I prefer solving on Across Lite and regret that this workaround adds a somewhat tedious extra step.

If it helps, look into an extension (Chrome/Firefox) called Crossword Scraper.

And not so much preference for me.  I haven't met a web crossword interface that wasn't completely unusable in some way or another.  Usually I end up with a time that's 4X Across Lite or paper and a white hot rage for having to fuss with all the inadvertent typos and what not for the applet not responding correctly in some way or another.

Thank you Glenn9999 for pointing me towards that lovely tool--it works like a charm on the NYTimes Sunday puzzle. I cannot imagine what they were thinking ditching Across Lite--that little app has changed my life!! And thanks trauer1982 for a yeoman's job of providing the text files again and again when .puz files have not been available.
