General Discussion / Re: NYT form letter rejection

3 months bad ice cream

Very curious to hear from others whether they've received rejections lacking any feedback.
After receiving feedback, what questions do you have for them, and then what are their reasons?

Software / Technical / Re: Searching and Consructing Acrostics

I'd suggest you try one of the Facebook groups that has a broader audience. Maybe "Puzzle Lovers" or the like. This site is solely dedicated to American style crosswords. But if you've googled "acrostic construction" and found nothing that strongly suggests such a thing doesn't exist.

Etc. / Searching and Constructing Acrostics
« Last post by kathylowden@yahoo.com on October 29, 2023, 11:42:08 AM »
I would like to try my hand at constructing an acrostic puzzle.   Does anyone know if is there any way to search old New York Times acrostics to determine that a particular author and quote has not been used before?  I use  Xwordinfo’s Clue and Answer Finder to spare me from constructing crossword puzzles with themes that have already been used – is there anything similar for acrostics?

Can anyone recommend any good software for constructing acrostics?  Alex Boisvert has a great youtube video showing his software, but when I try to use the program it links to, it doesn’t look or work like in the video.  An Australian man has something called “Crossword Express” that purports to have an acrostics component, but no matter how many times I download it, I can’t get it to open.  (Can you guess that I’m in my sixties?)

Any advice anyone can give would be most appreciated.

It's always fascinating to see legal steroids GNC the creativity and wordplay in crossword puzzles.

Well, there isn't much creativity in these  :D

A bit creativity is also nice, because in this today's fast world we mostly see fake things.

You've found an excellent workaround till a search is implemented, and I really appreciate you telling me about it. 5070 angel number

But the search has always been there. It's just that not everyone can see it. I saw it with my old account that I forgot the password for. So I made a new one, and now I can't see it anymore. Just bookmark this link and use it whenever you need to search for something on the forum: https://www.cruciverb.com/index.php?action=search

General Discussion / Re: A dupe too far?

Thanks for the response. Yeah, hard to know what an editor would do. I was looking for some sense of how bad these dupes are. Some dupes are obviously fatal, some are trivial and typically not a problem (eg. a repeated article), others lie somewhere in between. I wasn't sure where these fall on the spectrum. I can fix them, but the price is a small but clear reduction in the quality of the fill. Looking for help calibrating this tradeoff.

Of course, we don't know. If the theme and other fill are spectacular, these might be overlooked.

The real answer is if you are worried about these issues, then you should fix them. If they simply cannot be fixed by rearranging things (which is doubtful), then go ahead with the submission.

No one following this forum can tell you what an editor will do in these "close call" cases.

General Discussion / A dupe too far?

I've got ITSADEAL and ISITME in the same fill. I think having IT in the puzzle twice is acceptable, NYT had a Friday puzzle recently with this. But does adding in IS (and the S contraction) take it too far?

If that's OK, I also have IMNO and IASSUME. Again NYT has done puzzles with I duplicated so it would seem that this dupe by itself isn't fatal, but would doing it on top of the ITS/ISIT dupe be too much?
