Soup Balls of Green ("Green Soup Balls" would be confusing)

Digital water testers?   TOES
Victoria in Africa   FALLS
Fingers for the D.A.   IDS
Red Rose   PETE [he played for the Cincinnati Reds]
Silver in old Westerns   HORSE [Lone Ranger’s]
Game start?   HARDG
Nickel and dime   COINS
Kids’ stuff   TOYS
Berth place   UPPER [note spelling]
Theme: PEA found in phrases
Soup ingredients {and theme hint}   SPLITPEAS  [the PEAS are slit in the sense that they are each part of two words]

Just after sunset   ATDUSK [When I constructed Xwords BC {before computers} editors would not allow a random preposition before a noun, but I never understood why --- this seems fine.]

Best Tuesday puzzle I can recall.

RATING:   ;D ;D ;D Three grins = Excellent: Loved it; Two grins = Good: Enjoyed it; One grin = Satisfactory: A bit bland for my taste; One teardrop = Unsatisfying: No fun
