Call me stupid, but...

I can’t see how to erase on an Across Lite puzzle format. I click on the “eraser face” but it doesn’t remove the letter. I am using an iPad mini so the puzzle layout is quite awkward for old eyes. Simple question, simple answer, but Google was no help.
