Title: Duplicate "out"?
Post by: cranberry44 on August 04, 2021, 01:17:40 PM
Do you think I can use the entries "go all out" and "outsailed" in the same 21 X 21 puzzle?

Generally words that you wouldn't capitalize in a title can be repeated in a puzzle, such as articles and "short" prepositions such as IN and ON. I think OUT is usually capitalized in titles, so it probably shouldn't be repeated in the grid, though I suspect it sometimes is.

i thought since "out" stands as one word for one entry and is just part of a word for another entry, the entries might be OK. But I'll see if I can come up with a fix. Thanks, Mark!

Editors vary on this. Some will balk at words that are really different words but are similar in spelling and have the same etymological roots. One editor so much as said he didn't see why repeated words in the grid was a problem. Once upon a time repeated words in theme entries was in vogue, and one publisher still uses these. As usual, my recommendation is "if in doubt, out!" That way your grid is as clean as it possibly can be. Editors like this.
