Title: Theme question
Post by: Saul Pink on July 13, 2019, 07:25:59 PM
Hi all,

I have a theme idea, but I'm not sure if it's really allowed. The idea would be to use the numeral zero (0) in across entries and use the 0 as the letter O in down entries.

Example:
Across: 0DARKTHIRTY Down: any entry with an O, example: P0PCORN

Is this legal? If so, thoughts?

LA Times specs say no numerals in grid. I don't believe Newsday would consider such a theme. Just searching on some common "number" entries (IOO, IOI, IOOI), looks like WSJ is the only one that is using these. If the 0 (as zero) is replacing the letters ZERO in the entry, maybe a rebus would be possible. Can't be sure. If you'd like to PM me with the theme entries, I'd be glad to take a look and maybe see a way forward.

Been done before, at least in the NYT.
