Title: LA Times Question
Post by: Raymond Hansen on February 14, 2019, 04:00:43 PM
Does anyone know why the LA times requires you give your SSN when submitting a puzzle?

They have to have that information when they pay you; however, they're the only one that requests it on submissions, and once you've given it to them, it doesn't need to be on there any more. Most just request a form W-9 and that not until they've approved a puzzle.

I've often wondered about that. Is anybody else skiddish about sending a SSN via email? Do you think
LA Times would refuse to look at a puzzle if it didn't, at first submission, contain the SSN?

You're right to be skittish. Requiring an SSN to be sent via email is asking for trouble. I'm really surprised to hear that a large organization would do that in 2019.
