Title: L.A.Times
Post by: Gypsytat on July 11, 2017, 10:00:22 AM
No L.A.Times puzzle for past couple days? Last one was July 9th
No 7/10 or 7/11

Someone must be on vacation

The bloggers at Diary of a Crossword Fiend seem to be able to get the .puz files still (and yet their LAT link points here . . .). Anyone have an idea of where we can turn when they stop showing up? This seems to happen once or twice a year.

LATimes puzzle has been missing all week, plus couple of days last week.  Anyone know what is up with this site?

Somehow I get LATimes infor, but no puzzle

Thanks to Filer for the link to the puzzle on the Mensa website - it loads a lot faster there than on the LAT website since the Mensa site doesn't seem to show advertising. But I miss the puz / Across Lite format... Anyway, hopefully the person who posts the puzzles here on cruciverb is having a fantastic vacation!

Sad to say I made a 'donation' to this site in May, and now there are no LATimes puzzles!

I don't know who provides the LA Times puzzles or who "moderates" this site, but it's pretty lax. The Jonesin' link has been dead for months (puzzles ARE available elsewhere) and I've never seen an answer to a question here.

Folks, the owner of this site's email address is on the home page.

Yes. This is very disappointing. Some of you have been nice enough to provide links to the L.A. Times crosswords, but they aren't Across Lite. I wish someone would respond to these posts and let us know what's going on.

True, but to little avail.

Daily LAT puzzle is found using "Will's Calendar" under "Resources" on the home page.

Not in Across Lite (.puz) format.

There is a link in the column on the right side of the Home page. I recommend the WSJ puzzles listed under Saturday. They are in Across Lite format.

Cut and paste everything starting with <ACROSS PUZZLE> to a text file.  Then open Across Light, click "open file", and point to the text file you created. You should be able to print the puzzle and save it in puz format.

I don't see a way to post complete files on cruciverb (which would make things easier).

In any event, hopefully the regular posting of the puz files will resume soon!

I created a .puz file from your earlier posting but when opening it in Across Lite I receive a "corrupt file" error message.

I get the error too, but it still works. When you see the error message popup just click "OK" and then everything works as usual.

Yes, Across Lite is pretty picky about the format of the file being imported. It must be plain text and have exactly the right number of clue lines to match the grid. If you try to pull in an RTF or MS Word file for example, you'll get the corrupt file error. Also, make sure you don't have any blank lines at the end of the text file.

I just tried again to make sure the puzzle opens fine, but note that I'm using the Mac version of the program... the Windows or Linux version could be more picky.

Thank you, it was great to see the faithful Across Lite grid!
Can we expect daily updates to the text file until Cruciverb fixes the LA Times link?

I'll try, but it will depend on how long the gap lasts before Cruciverb fixes the broken link. I'm doing the reformatting manually, though I've been thinking for some time about automating all or parts of it since there are a lot of pdf puzzles out there aren't available in puz format. Extracting the text reliably from the pdf is the diciest part from an automation perspective. For now, stay tuned!

Apparently not. There was some discussion on the mailing list but nothing from Kevin as far as I know.

Original post (on July 20) updated with Saturday, July 22 puzzle.

I think those who want to download the puzzle now know to look back at the original post, so I'll stop adding these additional notifications.

We're closing on two weeks of no regular feed, which sounds like a nice summer vacation for someone!

I tried the attachment feature, but none of my PCs were willing to send the upload to Cruciverb.  So I updated last Thursday's post once again.

Trauer1282, I appreciate your having done this. I, however, seem to be a dolt and cannot take advantage of your efforts. I'm using a PC. Can you offer any further guidance?

Have you tried to attach both the .puz and a .txt formats of the puzzles to your message? Kevin might have put restrictions on the file types that can be attached.

If you are successful with a file such as latYYYYMMDD.txt, we can easily just change the extension to .puz.

I appreciate the assistance offered by trauer1282.   I use an iPad and don't understand how to apply this workaround.  Can someone please explain step-by-step how I can access the LA Times puzzles in my Crosswords StandAlone Inc. app using this method?  Thanks!

I'd like to see the step by step too. I copied the text into Word and saved it as a .TXT file and then changed the extension to .PUZ, but that didn't work.

All, sorry this is such a clumsy procedure.

For cbrockman: I tried your suggestion of uploading the file as .txt, but same error arises that points the finger at my system not being willing to pass the .puz or .txt file up to cruciverb.

For rbe: Changing the filename to .puz won't work.  Instead, cut and paste the puzzle contents into a .txt file and then tell Across Lite to open the .txt file.  This can be done in two ways: (1) Right click on the .txt file, select "open with", and select Across Lite from the choices. (2) With Across Lite running, click "open" from the menu and select the .txt file.  Once you have the puzzle open in Across Lite, you can print it, solve it, or save it as a real .puz.

For coralsun: The best way to proceed is to use the desktop version of Across Lite as described above to create a .puz file. Then open it on your iPad, e.g., by emailing it to yourself and opening the .puz attachment in your iPad email client.

It worked! I changed the extension back to TXT and opened in Across Lite as a TXT file.  :)

Nice to see the database updated as pointed out by Dedmon and others! But today's puzzle hasn't been posted and I needed my "fix", so I just updated posting from last Thursday with today's (Weds) puzzle. Hopefully things will get back to normal now...
