General Discussion / new crossword format
« Last post by fhadpe on April 03, 2024, 03:49:26 PM »
I have created a unique “crossword” format, which I am calling Crossword Nuances. It combines vocabulary puzzles and mini-crosswords with a main word component.  See puzzles at www.crosswordnuances.blogpost.com.

Additionally I have self-published a paperback, Crossword Nuances: 40 Puzzles, on Amazon.  The paperback book, containing puzzles and their solutions, is geared to crossword solvers and pre-college students seeking to hone their word skills.

To contact me, please send an email, labeled Nuances, to

General Discussion / Re: How many words should be in a word list?
« Last post by evawillms on April 02, 2024, 11:46:28 PM »
I tried to add two dictionaries in addition to the "default" one in Crossfire, and it wouldn't accept the third one, saying it was out of memory. It's not my computer memory because I have 128GB of ram and most of it is free when I get this error. I'm guessing it's the software's database limitation but don't understand why.

The Crossfire default dictionary, together with my two dictionaries combined, has 979,211 words.

This got me thinking: I see that the more words you let a software work with, the more autofill options it finds. Too little a word list and the software will say "unfillable grid."

But if 979,211 words spit out a memory error, I would like to know how many words do you guys typically let a software work with? Run 3
In the case of word games or puzzle-solving software like Crossfire, the software needs to maintain a word list in memory to generate autofill options and verify word validity. The larger the word list, the more options the software can generate. However, a larger word list also requires more memory to store and process.

General Discussion / Re: NYT ink saver
« Last post by danielkyler on April 02, 2024, 01:01:25 AM »
The ink saver feature isn't working at all – I slide it to a lighter shade, but the PDF still comes out with full black squares, wasting ink and making puzzles harder to read. And what's worse, the slider resets itself every time, as if mocking my attempts to conserve ink! This has been going on for weeks now, and it's driving me crazy! Has anyone else faced this iq test free-level puzzle of a problem? Is there a solution out there, or are we just left to drown in a sea of black ink?

As of August 2021, the New York Times discontinued its PUZ archive, so obtaining PUZ files directly from them may not be possible.mapquest

General Discussion / Re: Theme database

Yes, there are several resources available for crossword constructors to check if their theme idea has been previously used. One popular resource is the Crossword Database, which is maintained by crossword enthusiasts and contains information about themes, clues, and answers from various wordle puzzles. You can search for specific themes or keywords to see if they have been used before.

Truthfully, Nero being claimed as a fiddling emperor is more like mythology and never was reality.
But I quite like this illusion.

General Support / Re: New Visitor - where is SEARCH field in Forum?

The Search button is back. I can't remember why I removed it in the first place, must have been a reason. Hmmm. Anyway, it's back in the menu bar.

General Discussion / Re: Word Lists
« Last post by admin on March 05, 2024, 07:54:37 AM »
I regularly receive very good feedback on the cruciverb database word lists. I recently added more refined lists, so there are now six to choose from. All lists have had unusable (mostly thematic) entries such as letter drops, insertions, rebuses, etc., removed. You can read more on the cruciverb homepage.

This site cruciverb.com has a similar feature (Puzzle Database). Here you can actually see the grids (not just a list of answers/clues). I believe you have to have a paid membership to use this, and it only covers a limited number of publishers and isn't always up to date.

I realize the post I'm replying to is more than four years sold, but here's my take:

1) The cruciverb database may not cover all publishers, but certainly more than one (vis-a-vis xwordinfo). They include NYT, LAT, WSJ, Washington Post, Universal, New Yorker, Crossword Nation and more.

2) The database may have had periods of being out-of-date years ago, but I have made sure it is updated on a very regular basis for some time now. Do a search and see for yourselves!

The cruciverb database search allows you to enter full or partial entries while specifying "Thematic Only", so it's fairly easy to see if your puzzle's theme has been done before (or recently) in the major publications.
