LA Times rejected one of my puzzles. One of the comments was that "death"' and "dead" are different forms of the same word and so can't be used in the same puzzle. I now have "air gun" and "aery" in a new puzzle. Would this be considered too similar for the LAT?

mmcbs:
Probably so as they have the same etymology; but the real problem is it appears AERY is very seldom seen in crosswords, probably because it has the same basic meaning as the much more familiar AIRY. Not in my word list; I would advise against using AERY.

Thanks Mark. I'll redo the section.  Though I think this "root word" idea is a little far-fetched.
