Title: Need help with themer clues
Post by: aklingensmith on January 26, 2019, 08:05:09 PM
So I put together a puzzle where the theme is phrases that contain popular text abbreviations. My theme answers are:

NEWMOMGANG (OMG)
IMONTOYOU (IMO)
GETINTOHOTWATER (OTW)
CALMKIDDO (LMK)
CHEWTHEFAT (WTH)

I'm not sure how to best clue these, though. I was thinking it could be fun to do a clue that hints to the phrase, but also contains the feeling of the text word; something like "You won't believe the women at daycare!" for NEWMOMGANG. But (a) those are hard to come up with and (b) even that one seems pretty weak.

I would love any ideas or input people may have for how to clue this!

One of the warning signs of a questionable themer is that you can't figure out how to clue it. I think you've got one themer that's particularly problematic NEW MOM GANG gets 27 Google hits and about half of them are porn videos. And you're right in noting that there's not much of a connection between the text acronyms and the phrase they're hidden in. You might be able to remedy this with a reveal entry rather than trying to make a connection in the clues.
