Can someone explain what the word "noted" is doing in the clue "Noted arms manufacturer" (answer: COLT)?

It's an adjective describing "arms manufacturer".

It’s telling you that you’re looking for a specific arms manufacturer of note, rather than say another word or phrase that means “arms manufacturer.”

Like, if the clue were simply “arms manufacturer” the answer could be GUNSMITH. GUNSMITH is not a “noted” arms manufacturer, though.
