NYT - Best, or just most 'prestigious'?

Is the NYT the 'best' crossword puzzle (e.g., cluing, novel themes, interesting new words); or does it trail the leading edge, coasting on the prevailing perception of prestige?  Setting aside regard and reputation for the NYT, what puzzles, if any, are of equal technical and creative stature?

I'm sure others would agree that it's the best but more importantly the most consistent. The only "bad" thing about it is the fact that its clues are skewed away from current events.

Definitely the best.  I'd say the next best would be the L.A. Times edited by Rich Norris,  There are other very good puzzles out there, but they are written by constructors in a syndicate (e.g., CrosSynergy) or by individuals who have a contract with a newspaper (e.g., Henry Hook or Peter Gordon).  These do not take submissions from other constructors.
