LAT Wed. 5/16 Gagliardo & Burnikel
« on: May 16, 2012, 08:58:29 AM »
Possible Title: Cellular Noise

Good Ones:
Butter?   RAM
Short cut   SNIP
Made cents   COINED
Flag wavers?   GUSTS
Theme: phrase endings that can mean phone signals
Instrument {and theme}   PHONE [and last entry in puzzle to summarize]

By the Way:
“O.G. Original Gangster” rapper   ICET [I’m aware that each segment of our culture is grist for the Xword mill, but raise your hand if you knew this song.  I think there are an equal number of LAT solvers who know rap songs as can identify 5th Century palimpsests.  Those who know this song, and that may be millions, just don’t do these puzzles.  So the question is, why are there so many references to rap musicians and their output in crossword puzzles solved by those who have no knowledge of them?  Is the suggestion that we should know them?  Or is it just constructors’ teasing us?  Or both?  Or something else that’s equally beyond my ken?  BTW, I don’t dislike rap as most my age do; it’s simply irrelevant.]

Some Nits to Pick:
ETE [I’ve been suggesting “Gam end?” for this constructors' gimmie--- which I won't do since it's tiresomely clued as a French word.]

RATING:   ;D ;D Three grins = Loved it; Two grins = Enjoyed it; One grin = A bit bland for my taste; One teardrop = Not much fun
