LAT Sun. 4/8 Steven J. St. John

Good title: Failing French

Good Ones:
Charming, e.g.   PRINCE
Dead lines?   OBIT [note 2 words]
A hundred bucks, maybe   DEER [first thought was “herd”]
Theme: French expressions spelled incorrectly yielding different meanings
Deceptively realistic painting of The Donald?   TRUMPLOEIL [I really did LOL]
Passenger who doesn’t bug the cabbie?   LAISSEZFARE
Garden figure taking up arms?   GNOMEDEGUERRE
Ocean trip with a skeleton crew?   BONEVOYAGE

By the Way:
Pomaded ‘50’s subculturist   GREASER [In my neighborhood it wasn’t a subculture.  :)  Would it be P.C. to describe a rapper so?]

Who knew…?
Solomon ASCHE was a pioneer of social psychology, a faux science IMO
ANGELINE was a character in a kid’s book written by Louis Sachar
Louis Sachar wrote a kid’s book with a character named ANGELINE

Some Nits to Pick:
“Silly me!”   DOH [should be DUH; doh means the first note in the scale, though maybe in some dictionary or other it means “Silly me!”]

RATING:   ;D ;D ;D Three grins = Loved it; Two grins = Enjoyed it; One grin = A bit bland for my taste; One teardrop = Not much fun

From Definition of D'OH

—used to express sudden recognition of a foolish blunder or an ironic turn of events
Homer Simpson says it all the time.

Thanks, BJ.  That explains it.  I guess both Webster's Third and I are a bit musty.  Homer Simpson has become part of our culture; and, while I have never seen him, I am certain if he uses it, it must be right.
