Definitive slang dictionary?
(1/1)
mcdermott2:
Is there a definitive slang dictionary out there? I am never sure what slang is well known enough for inclusion in my puzzles.
One for-instance: does "Left-handed cigarettes" as a clue for REEFERS work?

I don't know if that clue works, but certainly the word works. I thought it was a slang for marijuana joints. The simple clue "Joints" would work.
I don't think there's a definitive dictionary, much less a definitive slang dictionary. The ear test is probably the best guide. If you've heard it and used it and know what it means, go for it.

When I read your post, I recalled listening to a program about a slang dictionary on NPR. I think this is the story:

The book is "Slang: The Topical Dictionary of Americanisms" by Paul Dickson. I don't know if that would be what you want. Here's the author's website:

I sometimes use Urban Dictionary (http://www.urbandictionary.com/). But the entries can be created by anyone; I usually find they are poor quality and have to double check them.

Thank you for that. Paul Dickson's book, "Slang: The Topical Dictionary of Americanisms ", may be what I am looking for.
