Today's theme contains words of unity, but there is no clue given that a theme exists so most solvers will miss it.  What I liked about this puzzle was its balance of subject matter: two entries each for about a dozen different subjects.

Less good was "Property co-owner for RENTER.  Renters don't own the property; they lease it.

What's the role of the editor? 

Should the editor have caught and fixed this, or are constructors expected to submit perfect puzzles?  I've also wondered if editors ever adjust clues to their liking, adding qualifiers, for instance.

The editor should have caught it and fixed it.

I can't speak for the LAT, but I've read more than one place that Will Shortz rewrites about half the clues for the NYT puzzle (not necessarily because of erroneous cluing, but more often to make the level of difficulty of the clue appropriate to the day the puzzle is running).
