… covert theme: 5 phrases ending in synonyms for whatsits

Cooks cakes  BAKES [note no apostrophe]
Snazzy duo?   ZEES [Even with the question mark, I seem unable to grasp immediately the spelling and instead scratch my head for meaning.]

Why are there so many 40-year-old and older references?
  • FDR’s successor
Milo OSHEA of the movie Ulysses
    SID Caesar
    EDNA Ferber’s Show Boat
    SSR [ok, maybe not]
IRMA La Deuce [could have been even older had it been My Friend Irma]
    Charles ROBB
ANNA of The King and I
RATING:   ;D Three grins = Loved it; Two grins = Enjoyed it; One grin = A bit bland for my taste; One teardrop = Not much fun

Hi Magus,

Thanks for posting.  I really liked the "Snazzy duo?" cluing.  I thought it was quite clever, with the word "snazzy" containing a pair of the letter "zee", and hence the "zees" are the duo present in the word.
