suqs in a puzzle?
« on: June 16, 2011, 05:03:41 PM »
I'm new to this.  Is 'suqs' an acceptable word in crosswords?  I know it's handy in Scrabble but not sure if it should be used in an American crossword.
Thanks in advance!
Amy

SUQ is a variant spelling, and these are generally frowned upon.  The more standard spelling is SOUQ (that's what Wikipedia uses).  However, the New York Times seems to prefer SOUK, so you might want to use that instead.

But this misses the main point: most solvers would only be familiar with SUQ/SOUQ/SOUK as a SCRABBLE word, if that.  Until one of these Muslim marketplaces features prominently in an American movie/TV show, I'd personally only use it in a late week themeless puzzle.

I haven't been at the forum page for a while and just saw this.  Thanks for the reply and info and sorry for the late response.  I've read a lot of vetran advice on this and other sites and with suqs, went with 'if you have to ask, don't use it.'  Thanks again!
