E-mail submission question, re: puzzle format

Hi everyone -

Pretty new to constructing and I've just started submitting to publications. I have a general question about submitting via e-mail.

I see in the publication specs that many editors will accept puzzle submissions via e-mail in Crossword Compiler format. I use a Mac, and construct with a program called Crossfire, which allows you to export puzzles in Across Lite (.puz) format. Are these two things equivalent? If not, will editors who prefer CC format accept submissions in .puz format? Or am I better off just going the old-fashioned postal service route?
