LAT Mon. 8/27 Bruce Venzke
« on: August 27, 2012, 08:38:32 AM »
Possible Title: “…You Better Shop Around”

Theme: two-word phrases each word of which can precede the word MARKET

Good Ones:
Big day for a new store {and theme}   MARKETOPENING [MARKET begins (opens) each word of SUPERSTOCK, FOODFISH, etc.]
Fowl pole   ROOST
Sugar substitute?   HON [as in “honey”]
Cavity filler: Abbr.   DDS

By the Way:
This is probably the most enjoyable Monday puzzle offered by the LAT in the years since I’ve been doing them, proving good puzzles don't have to be terribly challenging.  And this past week has seen the best run of puzzles I can remember.

Some Nits to Pick:
TRENTE

RATING:  ;D ;D ;D  Three grins = Loved it; Two grins = Enjoyed it; One grin = A bit bland for my taste; One teardrop = Not much fun

Or, rather, each word of the theme answers opens MARKET.

Steven--

In the light of what I wrote describing the theme and providing an example, I don't understand your comment.  Why would you "rather" yours?

You wrote:

I was clarifying that it's the opposite. Not marketsuper and marketstock but supermarket, stockmarket, etc.

You're right.  But one out of two ain't bad --- in baseball at least.

I liked this puzzle, too!

But I was surprised to find FOODFISH as one of the theme entries. I would have guessed it was not "in the language" even though I think the standard is more lenient for theme entries. Then I checked my dictionary and there it was. And I discovered that "fish food", which sounds to me like a much more natural phrase (what you'd feed a pet goldfish), is not in my dictionary. You learn something new every day, I guess!

Of course, I'm a vegetarian, so maybe I'm just out of my depth here. Bad pun, I know. :-)
