LAT Fri. 7/27 Bruce C. Greig
« on: July 27, 2012, 08:41:07 AM »
Possible Title: R Movies

Theme: intrusive R in movie titles

Good Ones:
Like the five movies {theme}   RRATED [because of the intrusive R]
The “Iliad” film version for kids?   TROYSTORY
Epic poet left-behind film?   HOMERALONE
Shakespearean holiday film?   BARDSANTA [not Christmas, again: 3 in 5 days]
Pin cushion?   MAT [wrestling pins, that is]
Broadway opening?   ACTONE
Mean business   EVIL
Elephant tail?   INE
Nice friend   AMI [oldie but goodie]
Do, for example   NOTE [do re mi]

By the Way:
Bruce must like football as he crossed [John] MADDEN with DAN [Marino]; I’d’ve used DAN “Cupid” for the incongruity --- but that’s Monday morning quarterbacking, so to speak.

Some Nits to Pick:
Frequently, to Frost   OFT [doubt he ever used the word; if so it could not have been oft, so I’d go with Byron or earlier poets]

RATING:   ;D ;D ;D Three grins = Loved it; Two grins = Enjoyed it; One grin = A bit bland for my taste; One teardrop = Not much fun

Quote
Frequently, to Frost   OFT

I was curious about this, so I looked. Frost has used oft, but it seems not often. Here's the first reference I found (from "My Butterfly"):
http://www.bartleby.com/117/31.html
"he / That frighted thee so oft, is fled or dead..."

I've noticed cruciverbalists like to alliterate, which is probably why Frost was chosen!

Marya---

You're obviously less cynical than I.

Haha I doubt it! But as a crossword puzzle editor, I do find myself double-checking information like this. I thought it was interesting that you had some doubts yourself, so I had to go look!
