According to Wikipedia, "In the United States of America, the LL.D. is awarded as an honorary degree only".

I don't trust Wikipedia, but I do Webster's, which makes no mention of the doctor of laws being honorary.  And, if Wikipedia were correct, would that mean that lawyers don't have an earned degree?  Perhaps Esq. is honorary.

They list the types of law degrees and end with this:

The LL.D. (Doctor of Laws) degree is an honorary degree and is not obtained through study in a law school.

Just looked up LLD and found that in some jurisdictions it is an honorary degree while in others it is earned.  Where it's honorary, the earned degree is a JD.  What this means is that I was wrong about the clue because at times an LLD is honorary, my ego is damaged, and I will forever loathe lawyers who can't even agree on the definition of  a law degree.  As a famous law teacher once said, "it depends on what the meaning of is is."
