Yes indeed, it was nice to see an acknowledgment of Memorial Day in today's crossword, along with five answers which can be followed by "Memorial": AIRFORCE, CIVILRIGHTS, IWOJIMA, LINCOLN and PENTAGON. 

Every day of the year, car dealers sell cars, furniture stores sell furniture, clothing stores sell clothing, shoe stores sell shoes, mattress stores sell mattresses and department stores sell many kinds of merchandise. For the past several days, the newspapers have been filled with ads from these stores: Memorial Day Sale! Memorial Day Sell-a-bration! Memorial Day Sell-a-thon! Memorial Day Doorbusters! Memorial Day Sales Event!

Our veterans and their families must feel very proud that the day which honors their service to our country apparently means absolutely nothing to these businesses other than enabling them to include the words "Memorial Day" in this weekend's ads for the same things they sell every day of the year. 

Let us never forget the dedication and sacrifice of the men and women who fight to keep our nation free.
