THEME:   First word of a two-word phrase (or portmanteau) can follow FIELD, making FIELD the "left" word
   
GOOD ONES:     
Figuratively, where some wild ideas come from; literally {theme}   LEFT FIELD    
Ear piece?   STUD [this good one must've slipped by the editor]   
   
BTW:   
The theme answer HANDBALL can be modified by FIELD two ways: field hand and ball field
