GOOD ONES:    
With [HAND], verifies in advance   CHECKS [literally, CHECKS before HAND]   
With [MEAL and MEAL], nosh   EAT [literally, EAT between MEAL(s)]   
With [NOON], 1975 movie   DOG DAY [literally, after NOON]   
Clubs with balls   DISCOS [I thought maces]   
Starr-struck one?   DRUM [Ringo Starr, that is]   
People people: Abbr.   EDS [editors worl on the magazine People]   
Nice view   MER [Nice /nees/ is a city with a view of the ocean]   
Opening lines?   WANT AD [openings for jobs]   
   
BTW:   
One of the best of the year for its theme, clever fill, and challenge.

I agree with the "three grins" rating. This puzzle had a really good theme!

For some reason my mind went to the comics page first for both 43A ("B.C. law group" = RCMP) and 48A ("Starr-struck one?" = DRUM). And I don't even read either of those comic strips (B.C. or the *very old* Brenda Starr) so who knows why.  I do think I saw a movie version of Brenda Starr many years ago (not very good).

I'm consistently amazed how many associations are brought up by certain words, even associations, like yours, which seem impossible.
