THEME:   last A of a phrase is substituted for by a U yielding a new phrase
   
GOOD ONES:     
Wedding song for Ivana or Marla?   THE-LADY-IS-A-TRUMP [still laughing]   
Easy strikekout victim?   BATTING-CHUMP   
Off-the-wall play   CAROM [literally]   
Ant who sings   ADAM [how about "that" instead of "who"?]   
Field of plants?   BOTANY   
Smart remark?   OUCH [smart=hurt]   
   
BTW:   
Meter reading   USAGE ["usage" refers to prose; "meter" refers to poetry, the usage of which is called prosody]   
   
Open D and open G, for guitars   TUNINGS ["tunings" is the name of actions (gerund) while the D and G refer to strings --- not actions]
