THEME:   four compass directions, respectively, found in phrases
   
GOOD ONES:     
Device useful in navigation {and theme}   DIRECTION-FINDER   
Verb ending   OSE [verbose]   
   
BTW:   
Extended break from svc.   LOA [probably used in the military, but I'd go with "length over-all" which is common in the Navy but also in boating]   
   
Why do constructors insist on referring to Star Trek at every chance?  Star Wars is another tired reference.  Perhaps they have stars in their eyes.   

   
Clever theme but the fill was much less so.
