Title: Cannot get to home page and puzzle listings
Post by: John Prejean on January 29, 2010, 10:54:27 AM
For the past two days the link to the Home page has been broken.  I get an error message saying "Index unrecognized -
at line 1490."  When I access Cruciverb.com the Forum page comes up but the Home page cannot be loaded.  What gives?
Thank you.  John D. Prejean

I am experiencing the same "lock out" message when I attempt to view daily puzzles.  Any advice?  Fixing the problem would be even more welcome.

This is the exact error I get today:

8: Undefined index: 5
File: /home/httpd/html/cruciverb/Sources/TPortal.php
Line: 1490

I was getting a different error yesterday, but didn't think to copy it.

Have not been able to log in for two days to get the puzzles.  Just now I googled cruciverb and entered the site by entering user name and password.  When I went to pull up LA Times puzzle it told me I needed to be a "gold member" and took me to Paypal.  What's up?

I'm glad it's not just me. It doesn't seem to be related to browser. It fails for me with both Opera and Firefox.

I was able to get to the LA Times puzzles by googling Cruciverb, and following the link to LA Times.  Didn't even need to sign in.  But I couldn't get the village voice or Wall street journal puzzles, because I couldn't get to the home page.

I know it's a lot of work, but I'd like to recommend to update SMF to its latest version (1.1.11), and probably TinyPortal to beta 4.

The problem does not come from hackers, since they really are not interested in your site.
The problem comes from hackers competitions: the aim is to deface the most sites in the least amount of time.
For that, they use automated tools to mass-hack sites.
Turkish hackers are very well known for these kinds of competition.
There have been also some attacks from malware groups, where they host files on legitimate sites.

In the first pass, the hackers scan the whole set of IP addresses (2^32 combinations), to detect the existing sites with their tools versions (forum, etc...).
In the second pass, they check what sites are vulnerable to their tools.
The third pass is the attack itself.

Since *every* forum comes with security holes, these forums are patched from time to time (and when the version is incremented, it's generally because a massive hole has been fixed).

So, I strongly recommend that you patch your site.
To give you an idea, you'll probably spend more time fixing your hacked site than upgrading it with the last versions.

I hear what you're saying. In fact, I tried to upgrade to the latest quite recently but TP wouldn't install. I've always had to do the manual install and this time it did not work. Need to work with the TP guys to see if they can help.

In your case, it may be better to update from 1.1.6 to 1.1.7, etc...

In general, upgrading from one version to the above one works, but upgrading from an old version to a recent one doesn't.

Sure glad you're back!

Any way to re-publish Friday's puzzles?

Can get to home page, and down load puzzles, however, they will not open up.
Had the same problem as others had with home page not opening.
Can this be fixed?
