Title: Rebus puzzle?

Hi, I'm brand new to the forum but do have some experience in construction. I'm looking for advice and examples for a specific sort of variety puzzle: one in which each square may contain 1 or 2 or 3 letters. Games Magazine often includes such a puzzle. I don't know if this should be called a rebus puzzle, because the individual entries in the square don't need to be sensible words. Anyway, I want to get started making one for a special occasion and don't really have a clue (ha ha) about how to start the layout.
