The covert theme is that the three theme clues {pan, ten, & kin} are included in the answers and are in some way descriptive of the answers.  Thus, "Pan" is a piece of COMPANIONPIECE. "Ten" would be a fragment of SENTENCEFRAGMENT.  "Kin" is a section of SMOKINGSECTION. Problem for me was that it took one cup of coffee to complete the puzzle and a second cup to figure out the theme.  But I suppose that's my problem, not Daniel's.
