Title: Proper names in crosswords
Post by: caverdia on August 17, 2018, 09:07:44 AM
Does the community have guidelines on the maximum number of proper names that should be in a puzzle, or in a given section? I prefer to do as few as possible, but I'm curious if other people have strong feelings on this.

As a solver, I can't say I see any clear guideline being expressed in any of the grids I see.  That said, proper names have the problem with the assumption that a vast majority of the audience might be aware of the persons in question, and stacking them has a way of making a puzzle unsolvable in a lot of respects if one or more of those names are unknown.

So if you find a degree of moderation with them, it's probably best.
