"Simply marvelous, with 'the'" was CATSMEOW. It is a truism that cats meow....but what exactly is---or was---the cat's meow? The expression dates from circa 1920 and is often attributed to newspaper cartoonist Thomas Aloysius "Tad" Dorgan (1877-1929). He is also said to have created the expressions "the cat's pajamas" and "23 skiddoo." However, linguists have not found definitive evidence. A detailed theory about the origin of "the cat's meow" is on the Disappearing Idioms site. Betty Boop and Marilyn Monroe are part of the explanation.
