Post by: magus on October 17, 2013, 09:21:34 AM
THEME:   first words of phrases begin with CHIEF, COOK [AND is part of the phrase], BOTTLE, and WASHER , all in order

GOOD ONES:
Rock blasters   AMPS
Sawyer employer   ABC NEWS
Contained opening?   SELF

BTW:
"I'm an idiot!"   DOH [when did doh replace duh?]

Abs strengthener   SIT UP [sorry, one won't do it --- I tried]

Argues ineffectively   YELLS [I don't believe an argument's effect is determined by the volume of the speaker.  EFFECTIVE?: "Now, Johnny, please don't point that slingshot at your sister.  Ask yourself, what could go wrong with doing so.  Is there a risk of an unintended consequence?"  INEFFECTIVE?: "Put that damned thing down now!  What if it goes off by mistake?"]

I suspect that DOH came from TV, The Simpsons. Filer

What a fun puzzle! I enjoy seeing this type of theme - something different.

Yes, that interjection at 31 Across (DOH) was made popular by The Simpsons. It's usually spelled D'oh - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%27oh!

Yes, thank you, I know the source of DOH, but when and why has it replaced DUH?  I'm a big fan of duh, have a vested interest in keeping the language from changing since I took some time to learn it, and I never saw the Simpsons.

magus, I think you're making a joke here but I don't see a smiley face.

Because whether it's Shakespeare coining new words, or new terms introduced by computers and technology, or slang from TV shows or Hip Hop culture the language is always changing.

Indeed our language is in constant flux, and I was teasing: an affinity for duh? (it's true I have never seen The Simpsons though I know it is a cultural phenomenon.)

Yeah, I was pretty sure you were joking, but it was so droll (well done!) that I was almost fooled. Changing the topic....
