Title: Wed., 3/27 C.C. Burnikel
Post by: magus on March 27, 2013, 09:26:07 AM
THEME:   words which precede DAY in names of holidays and which are abutting in this grid, making them "double days."

GOOD ONES:
Big name in publishing {and theme}   DOUBLEDAYS
Some spring rolls?   SOD
Summers in China?   ABACI [summer = adder]
Hoover rival   [ORECK]

BTW:
Obviously the editors pay no attention to this space:
ACER is a computer company, not a tennis player, except in crosswords edited by those who should know better.

ENERO is not used in our language, ever.

RATING:    ;D ;D
Three grins = Loved it; Two grins = Enjoyed it; One grin = A bit bland for my taste; One teardrop = Not much fun

Hi, rbe---

I know little about AOL, but are you certain their members are not referred to as AOLERS?  As popular as AOL once was it makes sense they might have had a name to distinguish them from other ISP users.  Of course, that doesn't mean the term really was ever used.

Having constructed 21x21's I know the temptation is great to stretch things a bit.  If I were still constructing I'd say to myself something like "if there isn't such a word, there should be" and hope my editor buys it.  Still, none of my past work contained any of these "cheats" though they did contain too many impossibly arcane words.  Computers have helped make puzzles better in this regard.
