Post by: magus on March 15, 2013, 09:41:40 AM
THEME:   intrusive SP changing an ordinary phrase to a less ordinary one

GOOD ONES:
"500" index {and theme}   SANDP [Standard and Poors]
Cherub?   RELIGIOUSSPRITE
Slogan for certain Lee fans?   ILIKESPIKE [Eisenhower]
Living in a blue state   SAD [not a Democratic one, at least not with Obama]
Biblical mount   ASS [I was thinking mountain  :-[ ]
Buds on spuds   EYES [liked the rhyme]

BTW:
I see Google so often that I can't spell GOOGOL. ::)   [I think googolplex was the largest "whole" number one could write.]

UOMO, while it's great for constructors with its 3 vowels, is a nice word, but it's Italian.

Just received this re: yesterday's puzzle:
51 down: DDE's home state is not Texas but rather Kansas. A common mistake because of Abilene Texas.  But DDE's Library and his burial site are in Abilene, Kansas.  Nancy F

RATING:    ;D ;D ;D
Three grins = Loved it; Two grins = Enjoyed it; One grin = A bit bland for my taste; One teardrop = Not much fun

The clue was DDE's Birthplace (not Home State). He was born in Denison, Texas.

Perhaps for some people one's home state is different from from one's birthplace.  If, let's just say, Mr. Obama were born in Kenya but moved to Hawaii as an infant and grew up there, most people would consider him Hawaiian.  Or, if he were born in Hawaii but grew up in Chicago, his home state may well be Chicago.  For me, one's home state is where one went to secondary school since one is most affected by one's peers at that age.  Or, as we said in my Brooklyn high school, "It's where ya went ta school. Period!"

Unless your clue was different than mine, there was no mention of "home state." It asked for birthplace. I must have misinterpreted Nancy F.s comment, I thought she was saying Texas was not he correct answer for the clue.

There was no mention of "home state," unless your clue was different from mine. It inquired about the user's birthplace. I believe my interpretation of Nancy F.'s statement was incorrect; I believed her to be stating that Texas was not the proper response to the clue.
